Chris Dodd bags 4 as Broadstreet 3rd’s demolish Barkers 2nd’s
Our first league fixture saw us away to the Germans and we couldn’t have asked for a better start at Camp Colditz. Broadstreet displayed early promise and were camped in our opponents half for the first 10 minute, however we failed to capitalise on this territory, and in their first meaningful venture, completely against the run of play, Barkers Butts big winger managed to elude some shaky defence to run in an easy try. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 0
This prompted Street into action, and just 3 minutes later, some good hands from the base of a solid Street scrum saw centre Stu Crawford power over for his first try of the season to bring Street straight back into the game. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 5
Barkers asked some serious questions of our scrum, however with 18 minutes gone, Street upped the concentration levels & impressively managed to drive Barker’s pack into touch. From this turnover ball Chris Zutic, who made an impressive debut on the wing, was stopped just short of the line. From the resulting line-out hooker David Roff snaffled the ball in open play and work-horse prop Aidy Jones, powered over for his 2nd try in as many games. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 10.
Our inconsistency at set-pieces was again highlighted ¾ of the way through the first half. We got driven well back on our own scrum, however returned the favour straight afterwards. This pressure allowed us to steal the ball from Barkers veteran Scanney, and flanker Chris Dodd ran in his 1st try of the day. Unbelievably centre Danny Rowstron got his first conversion of the season and made the score Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 17.
In a surprisingly well-tempered affair, the only fracas of the game occurred with 5 minutes to go before the end of the 1st half. From where we were stood it looked like number 8 Loper got battered by a midget rasher of wind, however he assures us it was Chris Dodd rolling around with their number 7. Whoever it was the German Umpa Lumpa was sin-binned for his efforts.
On the stroke of half-time, Chris Zutic made a great break at pace. His perfectly weighted pass to Jamie Dodd, allowed Doddy the time to draw the man and offload to Paul Lydster, who had a rampaging Chris Dodd in support. Chris managed to dot down under the posts to give Danny Rowstron and unmissable shot at goal. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 24.
With less than a minute of the 2nd half gone, prop Aidy Jones put some distance between the two sides with his 2nd try of the game. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 29. This good work was undone slightly 10 minutes later when he was yellow-carded for persistent infringement. The resulting reshuffle saw Loper come off to make way for South African hooker Neil Barnard, making his debut for the club. Barnard made an immediate impact in the scrummage and line-out and looks to be a good acquisition for the Club.
Halfway through the 2nd half, after a barren spell, Tim “Teenwolf” Smith won good line-out ball and Chris Dodd started the drive which finished in him scoring his hat-trick. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 34.
With 5 minutes to go, Paul Lydster made a quick break from the base of a strong Broadstreet scrum which paved the way for a short pass to Chris Dodd, who made it 4 tries to cap an impressively athletic afternoon. Barker’s Butts 7 – Broadstreet 39.
With the game beyond any doubt, Barker’s grabbed another consolation try, following an intelligent kick from the robust number 14. Barker’s Butts 12 – Broadstreet 39.
It was only fitting that Broadstreet had the last say in a game that we truly dominated, and it was left to Jamie Dodd to complete this 8 try mauling. Barker’s Butts 12 – Broadstreet 44.
Chris Dodd....4 tries says it all, however a notable mention goes to Dean Watts who did the unglamorous hard graft all day which gave Chris so much space.
Jamie Dodd....5 mins gone, went for glory and failed when he had a 2-man overlap
