Broadstreet's Free flowing running denied by Bedworth Dogged Defence

After steamrolling over Leamington RFC merely 3 days before, Broadstreet could be forgiven for thinking that their encounter against Bedworth RFC (a club in a lower league) would be a similar affair. However as always, Bedworth proved that they never give away easy victories and they reduced Broadstreet’s previously free flowing running play down to a hard slog.

Bedworth started the game the much brighter of the two sides and their fly-half exhibited some excellent tactical kicking which allowed the Bedworth forwards to pin down Broadstreet in their own 22 for the opening chapters of the match. 15 minutes into the match Bedworth this forward pressure finally took its toll on Broadstreet and they scored a try in the corner after numerous pick’n’goes from the base of the ruck.5-0

Going a try down seemed to jumpstart the Broadstreet forwards with Chris Dodd especially making some in roads through the Bedworth defence. However, it was the new-boy Matt Evans from Whitchurch who scored his 3^rd try in two games to bring Broadstreet back level when he once again showcased some powerful running to crash over after a lineout. 7-5

With 10 minutes to go in the half ‘Street were once again threatening the Bedrock try line with some powerful running from the street forwards, however Nick Thatcher once again popped up from scrum half, performed his trademark show’n’go and squeezed throught the ruck defences to score another pre-season try (I think it is 5 in 3). 14-5

Unfortunately i went in at this point because of the torrential rain and apparently missed a try from both sides.

The poor weather relented for a period in the second half and both teams seemed to try and take advantage of this to play some decent rugby. Broadstreet kicked this off by stringing together a set of good platforms for the backs to try out some moves which allowed winger Edward Junior to hit the ball at pace and touch down in the corner.

Bedworth responded almost immediately, reverting back to their strengths they trundled the ball up field using their strong ball carrying forwards and forced there way over the ‘Street line a meer 3 minutes after Junior’s score. However this proved too be the last effort from the Bedworth pack and ‘Street finally seemed to take control of the game, dominating for the last twenty minutes.

Once again Matt Evans showed strong running skills sucking in the Bedworth defenders directly from the ruck before off-loading to Southwell who was bundled over the line to score (unfortunately for Carlos this is not counted as a ‘proper’ try and he is still eligible for the naked run). Edward Junior rounded off his good personal performance and a disjointed team performance when he took the ball 45 metres out, beating 2 players to score his second just before the final whistle blew.
