Broadstreet Rugby Colts Lay Leamington RFC Colts Low
Broadstreet U19’s kicked off the season with a win in a Warwickshire Merit Table match away at Leamington RFC.
‘Game of Two Halves’!
With at least 10 senior colts unavailable, a mixed age group outplayed their hosts in a proverbial game of two halves, to win 26 – 17; with first half tries from back rowers Sam Cullinane(2), and Lewis Clarke and centre Sam Vagg. Three conversions added by full back Jack Howland, gave ‘Street a 5 – 26 half time lead, however, Leamington stepped up their effort in the second period to register two late tries and a clean sheet for a final score of 17 – 26.
Five Under 17 players stepped up an age group with Ben Dalton, Gareth Price and Lewis Masterson putting in sound performances in the pack and Robbie Venson displaying power and pace at inside centre.
‘Impressive Vagg’
For the first 10 minutes ‘Street were pinned in their own half due to a torrent of penalty infringements,(penalty count for the game being an horrendous 22 against – one every three minutes? - and 5 for the’ Street) and on gaining their first penalty award 10 metres from the line, scrum half Lewis Gardner tapped and ran feeding Robbie Venson who broke clear to hand on to fellow centre Sam Vagg. Leamington’s cover swarmed, but the impressive Vagg powerfully handed off 5 would be tacklers, running 60 metres for an outstanding touch down under the posts.
Leamington replied 6 minutes later with an unconverted try when awarded a penalty close to ‘Street’s line but ‘Street’s Sam Cullinane grabbed a brace of tries during the next ten minutes, both from inside runs off fly-half Robbie Holmes, to push ‘Street up to 19 points.
‘Captain Clarke Crashes Over’
Five minutes before half time ‘high work rate’ captain Lewis Clarke chased a relieving kick from ‘Street’s half to gather and out pace the cover in a 40 metres sprint to the line.
‘Leamington RFC Hit Back’
The second half ‘Street dropped their effort and picked up two yellow cards, the hosts raised their game scored two tries and a valuable lesson in playing for the full 70 minutes, was hopefully learned by those ‘Street players who sat back thinking that the Leamington lads would lie down for them.
