You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief from the rest of the Clubs in Warwickshire 1 when the announcement was made that our 2nd team would be joining a new independent league this season. Ultimately this saves some of them the embarrassment of having to find another season’s worth of excuses....favourites from last season were “Our fly-half’s got mumps” and “The dog ate our boots”.

The void left by this departure could only be filled by one side, and as Broadstreet 3rd XV finished the season as Warwickshire 2 champions (and winners of the Cov & District midweek cup), we didn’t need asking twice to step into the “two’s shoes”.

We are under no illusion that this season will be extremely tough, however the great thing about the 2nd’s & 3rd’s being promoted is that everyone at the club will be involved in a good standard of competitive rugby, which will only improve the overall depth and breadth of ability at the Club. Every opposing team will be determined not to lose to (a) Broadstreet and (b) a 3rd XV, and as such we will undoubtedly have to raise our game in all areas if we are to continue the momentum and success that has been building up over the last few years.

There is a rumour going around that t’internet and electronic mail are catching on, and determined not to be left behind, the Club have integrated a new web application from Schport into the various team sections on our superb, revamped Club website (www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk). It’s a great online tool which provides players and supporters one central location to view fixtures, results, statistics, player profiles and team news. This has already become a firm favourite with the “silver surfers” in our squad, and is now above SAGA, Help the Aged, Farah and Werther’s Originals in their website rankings! So go on take a look, the more you use it the better it will become.

It’s a long, hard season with plenty of league, friendly and midweek cup fixtures, and as such we are looking to build up a strong squad of players and supporters – young or old, newcomer or experienced veteran – the main priority is that you want to be part of a successful and sociable team. So if you’re up for playing pass on your e-mail and mobile details to Browny, Matt Stuart or Loper by emailing us at player-manager@broadstreet-rugby.co.uk.

Finally, if we get enough early interest, we are hoping to organise a 3rd team tour to Spain in mid-March. Get your £75 deposits to Loper to book a place.
