‘Broadstreet Colts Talk Their Way Out of a Win’

Broadstreet U19 Colts hosted Hinckley U19s, when Rugby Lions cancelled late in the week and Broadstreet wanting a game in which they could play rugby. Traditionally strong, Leicestershire colts champions Hinckley ran out 26 – 29 winners, in a game where Broadstreet’s vocal indiscipline undoubtedly cost them the win.

Improper remarks, on more than one occasion cost Broadstreet dearly in terms of yellow cards, territory and decisions. Referees do not, and should not, have to tolerate such and players have to learn that questioning decisions and showing or expressing dissent, reveals naivety at best and stupidity and disrespect at worst.

Hinckley registered the first points after just 6 minutes, when a converted try resulted from a line out catch and drive took them close and an over commitment by the midfield defence saw the attacker step inside ‘Street’s fly half for soft touch down.

Ten minutes later the lead was extended from a series of Hinckley rucks near the home line, which were being well defended until a ‘Street forward, yet again shot out of the defence line to leave an easy passage to the line. Broadstreet 0 Hinckley 14.

An immediate response was needed and duly initiated by a Dan Staunton break three minutes later, carried on by fly half Jack Howland whose switch inside gave strong running centre Sam Vagg a clear gallop to the posts. Howland converted.

The arrears were reduced to two points by half time when a double turnover saw captain, Mikey Tyrrell come away with the ball to put speedy wing man Mark Brittain away for an unconverted try.

Half Time: Broadstreet 12 Hinckley 14.

‘Street lost lively scrum half Lewis Gardner minutes into the half and after a reshuffle and with eight minutes on the clock half Mikey Tyrell was awarded 10 minutes in the sin bin for hands in the ruck and Hinckley scored from the resulting penalty lineout to take their score to 19. Hinckley registered again in this period when exploiting the extra man overlap, to score in the corner.

Broadstreet 12 Hinckley 24.

‘Street had to score next to keep in touch and did so from a Hinckley attack, where great covering back by Michael Waine allowed Vagg to steal the ball and set off on a long range run. Howland added the two points.

A second yellow was issued to back rower Clarke for dissent at the scoring of Hinckley’s last try when he remonstrated that he had held the ball up over the line, but by then too much Broadstreet questioning had taken place and, thereafter, understandably the decisions did not go their way.

Nevertheless, good play and recovered composure saw ‘Street have the last ‘rugby’ word. Tyrrell picking up from number 8 at a 30 metre scrum, made ground and fed the scampering hooker Scott Mc Owat for him to out bustle the remaining defenders for a popular score. Howland added the two to leave ‘Street three points 4 points short of a win which, with better discipline, was well within their capabilities.
