Warwickshire 1 league

Newbold 2nd XV                17 Broadstreet 3rd XV 19

Not only was this an extremely close encounter, but by all accounts it was an exciting game to watch too, which thankfully saw Broadstreet 3rd’s snatch victory at the death to put themselves top of the Warwickshire 1 league table just ahead of Old Laurent’s on points difference!

It’s great news for the Club that a large number of senior and colts players are making themselves available every week, however Street once again failed to find an additional 3rd XV fixture in the pool, and as such took a big squad of 24 including 2 new French debutants in the backs – Pierre and William, with the hope of getting everyone on, and to their credit Newbold 2nd’s agreed to our request as long as they could have rolling subs.

Following a disappointing performance which saw us lose last week’s friendly against Leicester Vipers, Street went into this third league fixture with a number of points to prove, however things really didn’t start too well. Whilst both packs fought it out at close quarters, Newbold’s back-line posed a real threat right from the off, and were only thwarted at times by some desperate tackling from Street. It was perhaps inevitable therefore that they’d be rewarded for their efforts and some quick hands and a bit of fortune saw the home side take the lead after 15 minutes. Newbold 7 – Broadstreet 0

The long overdue return of 2nd row Mike Bednall saw him reunited with his bum-buddy Trev Court in the engine room, and with hooker Neil Barnard finally having the luxury of targets to actually aim for, Street dominated the line-out all day. Broadstreet’s scrummage was also pretty solid, and the pack notched up a well-deserved push-over try for scrum-half Paul Lydster ably assisted by skipper Chris Harrison. Centre Danny Rowstron got his first conversion of the day to put us level. Newbold 7 – Broadstreet 7

To be fair, in the first half Newbold’s backs looked sharper than ours and their forwards were quicker to and more aggressive at the breakdowns. However Broadstreet have got the experience and the talent to believe that we can come back from most scenarios, and we ended the half on top with a great try. A textbook rolling maul from a clean catch-and-drive from another excellent line-out, led to number 8 Chris “Loper” Harrison, on his return to his former club, scoring his 2nd try of the season, which was converted by Danny Rowstron. Newbold 7 – Broadstreet 14

In the 2nd half, Newbold came out of the blocks quicker and managed to close the gap with a penalty. Newbold 10 – Broadstreet 14. They then took the lead for the second time in the game after a mix-up on the half-way line between Lyddy and wing Andy “YP” Hirons. The ensuing race to the try-line was won by Newbold making it Newbold 17 – Broadstreet 14.

Loper had already wound up the opposition considerably, firstly by kicking out at a loose ball and almost taking the scrum-half’s little balding head off, and secondly by taking a “Drogba” dive clutching his face in the ensuing melee in a an attempt to try and get someone carded. Amusingly no-one really bothered about it, however it came as no surprise that Loper’s subsitution was met with abuse from some of the Newbold lads.

But you should never count your pork scratchings until they are cooked, and Newbold were forced to eat their own “s**t banter” pie just minutes later, when some great donkey work from replacement number 8 Dave “Clown Shoes” Stevens and “Supersub” 2nd row Dunc Farrington set up the platform for the backs to weave a final piece of magic. The very last play of the game saw full-back Chris “Milkman” Price, who had a great game after coming on for Mark Atkinson, receive the ball following a neat scissors move between fly-half John Warne & Lyddy. Time stood still and the crowd held their breath as Milky attempted to lure the defence with a cheeky show of the ball in one hand!   Miraculously it paid off and “The Milkman” tipped a full pint of Broadstreet double cream all over Newbold’s doorstep and the victory was ours!!!! Newbold 17 – Broadstreet 19

We have still yet to play some of the stronger sides in the league however all we can do is keep beating the sides in front of us. We don’t have a league game this Saturday 9th Oct, however we have agreed to take on the 2nd XV’s game away at Dudley and are actively looking for another 3rd XV fixture.

MotM:

 spilt-milkChris “Milkman” Price – rolled back the years and silenced some of the critics who thought his milk may have gone off a bit and turned to cheese.

DotD:

 A few close runners here, namely;

  • pepe-le-peuNew-boy Pepe Le Pue (Pierre/William) for rocking up with Les Campbell’s hairdo (all the rage in Camembert apparently!)
  • riviera“Starry-eyed Surprise” – not for getting KO’d but for getting possessed by the Blair Witch whilst being administered to by the hopeless Dr. Barnard - our very own Dr.Nick from the Simpsons....”Hey everybody!”
