Dudley Kingswinford Development XV 31 – Broadstreet 3rd XV 27
It’s fair to say to say that the most common reaction when hearing news that the 3rd’s had taken the place of our 2nd XV in this friendly fixture against DK’s development squad was a sharp intake of breath and raised eyebrows, however such is the attitude throughout the Club at the moment that the overwhelming feeling amongst the lads was that we could definitely get something from the trip to the foreign Black Country. And get something we almost did! In fact Broadstreet forwards dominated proceedings and we can feel unlucky to come away losing to a side that had only been beaten once in their previous 5 games.
DK drew first blood with a penalty goal, and then, following some slack Broadstreet defending and a lucky bounce DK scored the first try of the day. DK 10 – Broadstreet 0. This didn’t dent confidence and Broadstreet continued to play with composure, but despite this DK managed to grab another try against the run of play. DK 17 – Broadstreet 0.

Thankfully Street managed to narrow the deficit with an unconverted try from French winger Pierre Dubay. DK 17 – Broadstreet 5. Broadstreet’s set pieces were working well and a break from scrum-half Lyddy after a Street line-out was supported superbly by Coventry University student 2nd row, Jon Beale, who capped off an excellent debut with a well-deserved try. DK 17 – Broadstreet 10. DK got another try before the break to make it DK 24 – Broadstreet 10 at half-time.
The team talk at the interval was all about how simply we could get back into the game, and that’s exactly what happened. Colt Jack Howlands turned in an impressive performance at full-back, and shortly after the break he was joined by fellow Colt’s Joe Lowry and Marc Brittain, which gave Street some much needed pace out wide. Number 8 Henry M-Brown was in rampaging form all day, and his 3 tries epitomised a strong performance from a forward pack.
By far the most satisfying try of the day came from a DK scrum just inside their 22. The Street front-row of Blair Witch Project, John Brown and debutant prop Sam Vale had worked tirelessly all day and chose the perfect moment to deliver a monumental drive which won Street the ball against the head, and there was no way DK were stopping the bulk of M-Brown from short distance. There is also the distinct possibility that the DK tighthead led the rapid retreat in a desperate attempt to escape the constantly s**t banter from his opposite number!
Danny Rowstron really does need to practice his kicking or change his boots!

Back to league duties this week with the home game vs Earlsdon 2nd XV who will undoubtedly be out for revenge following Saturday’s Warwickshire cup exit at the hands of our 2nd’s.

MotM:
Henry M-Brown – made a real nuisance of himself all day and as a result was rewarded with a hatrick of tries. Notable performances from Colt flanker Dan Staunton and fellow colt Jack Howlands, and Cov Uni newbies Sam ‘Jonah Hill’ Vale and Jon ‘Rodders’ Beale.
DotD:
Ross Clarke. It would have been YP for going out on the lash the night before and getting battered at the taxi rank, however at least he turned up for the game (sort of!).
