‘Broadstreet Rugby Club Colts Register a Comfortable Victory Despite Being On Short Time!’
By Bob Harcourt
The U19s won their National Colts Cup contest against Luctonians Rugby Football Club U19s with a comfortable, but not dominant, 29 – 15 result.
With an impressive first half display of fast efficient rugby producing 22 unanswered points, ‘Street could have produced more of the same and treated the home crowd to a resounding win. Instead, they capitulated in the scrums and at contact time, giving the visitors a chance to show that they too could play, given some possession - leaving ‘Street to defend for most of the second period, which Luctonians took by 3 tries to one.
Tries from captain, Mike Tyrrell (1minute); centre Kristian Lynam (7 minutes) and scrum half Lewis Gardner (23 minutes), plus 2 conversions and an 11th minute penalty by Jack Howland gave ‘Street the cushion that was to prove crucial in the second half.
All three were top draw team tries with the first one coming from the kick off then passing through several pairs of hands to give skipper Tyrrell a clear run in. The second came from a break by Kristian Lynam, handed on to full back Joe Lowery and Sam Vagg, before being returned to Lynam to finish off his initial good work. The Gardner try came from off the top of a penalty lineout; taken on by back-rowers Lewis Clarke and Mikey Tyrrell and popped out of the tackle to the supporting scrum half.
Although a number of later changes altered the shape of the team, this was not the cause of a sloppy showing, where a solitary 20th minute Mark Brittain try and Jack Howland conversion was all ‘Street had to show for a poor second period.
