Stratford Development XV 16 Broadstreet 3rd XV 33
“Sing a song for Broadstreet,
Our bellies full of beer,
One and twenty beavers,
Angry without fear.
Come see that fury unleashed,
Beavers doing wrong,
Led by “Lopez” Harrison, our wheeler-dealer mong!”
Shakespeare’s birthplace was the destination for the table-topping Beavers, in Street’s toughest league test of the season to date, and both sides certainly played the game with an intensity befitting the fixture. Street’s backs displayed the most creative intent right from the outset, and the deadlock was finally broken after 20 minutes following a clever cross-field kick from Bolshoi Brummy Steve “Grade 8 all-over” Allen, which was superbly taken by right-wing Steve Devoy who was able to score under the posts. Skipper Loper “Monkey-man” Harrison had stirred up the boys before the game and the Angry Beavers managed to concede 2 penalties in quick succession which were converted by Stratford’s fly-half. Stratford Development XV 6 Broadstreet 3rd XV 7
The next try came as Stratford attempted to clear from just inside their 22. Effervescent hooker David Roff, who had a fantastic game throughout, charged down the kick and the resulting quick hands from “Easter Egg” Rowstron and Jamie Dodd gave Chaemo an opportunity to gas his opposite number which he duly did. With 8 mins to go before half-time, some good inter-play between scrum-half Paul Lydster and number 8 Loper gave 2nd row Sean Kenney the perfect platform to power over for Street’s 3rd try. Stratford Development XV 6 Broadstreet 3rd XV 19
Just before half-time, Stratford’s pack were rewarded with a try following a textbook rolling maul.
Half-time: Stratford Development XV 13 Broadstreet 3rd XV 19
Referee Mark Cubbitt, a Kiwi from South Yorkshire down in the Midlands on a cultural exchange, generally had a good game however given that he’d been warned to look out for Coventry sides’ over-zealousness, perhaps this explains why he harshly sin-binned flanker Ben Moorcroft for his first offence “not releasing in the tackle”. Stratford converted the penalty. Stratford Development XV 16 Broadstreet 3rd XV 19
Whilst we were down to 14 men however, Street managed to put some distance between the two sides with a well-worked try. Scrum-half Lyddy broke off the back of a scrum and drew in the cover defence before off-loading to veteran fly-half John Warne who “out-sprinted” the remaining defenders to score under the posts. Then, just as Ben Moorcroft’s time in the bin was up, Sean Kenney followed him onto the naughty step for “cynicism”!! Despite this, Street sealed the game with a well-deserved forwards try. A number of pick-and-go’s gave Loper the platform to dot down for the Beaver’s 5th and final try.
Final score: Stratford Development XV 16 Broadstreet 3rd XV 33
MotM:
Roffy – awesome contribution, a constant menace. A special mention must also go to Cov Uni’s winger Youssef Hussain, who made an impressive Broadstreet debut from the bench.
DotD:
No-one deserved it for their on the pitch antics, however this week’s DotD goes to garage fanatic Steve “Staystrong” Allen for his massive sulk at being replaced after 50 minutes! It was hard to make out the majority of his Brummy grumble however it was something about questionable tactics!
