Good luck to Cameron Pimlow who has been snapped up by Beddau RFC after a short but productive stint with us, Beddau are towards the top of Welsh Division 1 (a similar standard to Coventry’s National 1) so the move is a positive step forward for the 21 year old. This, however, once again leaves a gaping hole in the starting line up at fly-half, so it was left to scrum- half Mark Schropfer to try his hand in the position, allowing Thatch to continue at 9. Brett Chatwin moves into the centre to fill in for Andy Skene which allowed Dan Phillips to start on the wing. Chris Zutic earns his first start since moving to ‘Street from Earlsdon and Carl Southwell comes in at hooker at the expense of Ciaran Price.

Andy Tee took over the kicking duties for the match and was called upon in the first minute after Scunthorpe RFC were judged offside after the opening phases of play, his kick from distance notched up 3 points and began an excellent kicking display. 5 minutes later any question marks about whether Shroff could fill in at 10 were duly answered when he ghosted through the Scunthorpe defensive line, breaking clear from his own half before banging out a great 20 metre pass into the hands of Matty Fielder who won the race to the corner. Tetley added the extras with an excellent conversion from the touchline Broadstreet RFC 10- Scunthorpe RFC 0

Scunthorpe had an opportunity to close the gap but flyhalf Mark Woollard surprisingly missed what was his easiest kicking position of the day but he made up for this just minutes later when he slotted a penalty from 40 metres plus. On the 20 minute mark, some extended pressure from the Broadstreet forwards near the Scunthorpe line created an overlap for the backs with Tetley in the receiver position ready to feed the back-line queueing up outside him. However a quick show’n’go fooled the Scunthorpe defenders working hard to cover the outside and he scored his 2nd try of the season. Broadstreet RFC15 - Scunthorpe RFC 3

Just 5 minutes after, Broadstreet extended their lead due to some good forward work. A strong scrum put the Scunthorpe number 8 under pressure when he picked up close to his own line, Broadstreet forwards counter-rucked at the breakdown and the ref penalised the 8 for holding on. A quick tap and snipe predictably ended in a try for Nick Thatcher close to the Scunthorpe posts. Scunthorpe’s scrumhalf Mclean replied with a try shortly after, latching on to a break blind by the winger who drew the covering defenders and fed Mclean?? for the score. Broadstreet RFC 22- Scunthorpe RFC 10

With 5 minutes to go, Broadstreet built a bigger buffer sending themselves in comfortable leaders at half-time, having probably played their most complete half of rugby this season. The back-line looked threatening and Shroff distributed well from 10 whilst the forwards set up phase after phase of good platform’s which allowed them to play. This was exemplified by the final try of the half, Chatwin scythed through the Scunthorpe defence beating a number of would-be tacklers before offloading to Deardon. Quick rucking allowed quick ball to Shropfer who ambled sideways sucking in 2 defenders before feeding Simkiss who had scissored with him. Now behind the Scunny defensive line Simkiss put on a slow burst of pace before offloading to Zutic who injected the necessary speed to power through 2 tackles and get ‘Street to the try-line. Broadstreet RFC 27 - Scunthorpe RFC 10

Broadstreet continued to do some damage in the scrum at the start of the second half but despite turning the scrum 90 degrees the referee failed to reverse the feed. Instead 6 minutes into the 2nd half a turned Scunthorpe scrum was allowed to continue, the ball was fed to Woollard who hoisted the ball cross-field. The ball bounced in play and was collected by winger Wade who managed to complete a 40 metre dash to the try-line. Broadstreet RFC 27 - Scunthorpe RFC 17

2 minutes later initial poor tackling from some Broadstreet forwards deep in the Scunthorpe half opened the door for the best try of the match. A series of interchanging offloads out of tackles took Scunthorpe right up the pitch and this was finished by Chris Neal who was the final support runner and the end of a fantastic run. Unbelievably Scunthorpe took the lead from Broadstreet just minutes later, driving over in the far corner from a lineout. For a better description ask the Broadstreet forwards who were watching intently from 5 metres away. Broadstreet RFC 27 - Scunthorpe RFC 31

The horror start to the second half was a flashback to the Bromsgrove game, where a similar spell of poor play gave the opposition an insurmountable lead which kept ‘Street from competing for a vital league win. If we are going to be serious promotion contenders then periods of play like that can never happen again. On a lighter note Broadstreet halted Scunthorpe’s purple patch with probably their best try of the afternoon 15 minutes into the 2nd half. Fielder returned the ball from inside his 22 and showed good strength to break a couple of tackles, the ball was quickly recycled and sent wide to Chris Zutic who added enough pace to break round the outside of the Scunthorpe defence. Andy Tee ran a great line and Zutic held on long enough to draw the tacklers before offloading to the fullback who continued on towards the Scunthorpe 22 before being caught. He turned and fed Dan Phillips who then sent a miss pass across the path of two supporting forwards to find Nick Thatcher in acres of space and a free run at the line. Broadstreet RFC 34 - Scunthorpe RFC 31

2 minutes later Broadstreet were back in Scunthorpe’s 22 but with the potential to mount another threatening attack, however a loose pass behind the attacking line had Shroff scampering back to secure the ball and the Scunthorpe players were quick to try and isolate him behind his support. However in one quick fluid motion he snatched up the ball and without looking to check his position in relation to the posts executed a drop goal which sailed through the up rights. The cheeky little welsh man turned and began jogging back to his own half without even looking to check he had slotted it. Woollard was not to be outdone and he once more closed the gap with an outstanding penalty which wouldn’t have looked out of place in an international match. Broadstreet RFC 37 - Scunthorpe RFC 34

With 20 minutes to go Scunthorpe looked out of the game despite the close score-line, this was compounded when they were reduced to 14 men when prop Sydall was sent off for ‘tripping’ (surprisingly) Ed Simkiss after ‘Street had been held up over the line and were walking back to the attacking scrum. Simkiss rubbed salt in the wound when, after Nigel had powered off the base of the scrum, he latched on to the second phase ball and stumbled over the line. Broadstreet RFC 44 - Scunthorpe RFC 34

With 10 minutes to go Ben Dawes put the game out of reach in standard fashion and crashed through a couple of tackles after picking the ball from the base of the ruck, there was a raft of backs waiting for the ball outside him but I think they knew they weren’t getting a sniff. Brett Chatwin added to his total at the top of the try scorers list when he wrapped up a threatening game at outside centre and the scoring with an easy try after the Scunthorpe defenders had seemingly given up
