Broadstreet RFC 39 - Malvern RFC 32
It was a typical November Saturday afternoon to honour Andy Farrington in Broadstreet RFC’s Super Saturday feast of rugby. The weather was foggy with a chill in the air and last minute cry offs meant enforced changes to Broadstreet Head coach Tom Hoines’ initially selected squad. Brett Chatwin had a painful shoulder so Mark Rea was moved off the bench into the side at outside centre whilst Chris Zutic failed a late fitness test so Nick Pratt moved to the back row and Tom Greevy replaced him in the second row.
Malvern kicked off towards the 'Street 22 and Simon Morris was underneath it to take a clean catch and staying strong for the 'Street forwards to recycle the ball and take on the Malvern RFC defence. The pack went through the phases pressurising the Malvern defence to step over the offside line which gave Andy Tee the opportunity to take the first points of the afternoon with a penalty kick. Tetley obliged the Street supporters to put the home side into a 3-0 advantage. Broadstreet RFC 3 – Malvern RFC 0.
Mozzer took the 2nd Malvern kick off in similar fashion to the first, this time the forwards feeding the backs for Andy Tee to clear to touch giving Broadstreet another attacking platform from which 'Street ending up being penalised. The next Malvern RFC attack saw ‘Street able to turn over the ball feeding the backs, however a poor clearance kick gave the Malvern fullback time and space to return the ball with pace and support, exposing Broadstreet’s defensive frailties to score a try in the top left hand corner. Broadstreet were penalised again for going into the side of the ruck giving Malvern an opportunity to kick for territory, from the resulting lineout Malvern closed the gap giving Broadstreet an opportunity to take on the Malvern forwards with a quick tap penalty feeding Ben ‘Crash-ball’ Dawes great support from the forwards as an eight took the ball back to the Malvern 22, where the visitors were penalised for coming in from the side and Mark Schropfer attempted to make it two drop goals on the trot, unfortunately this time kicking wide so Broadstreet went back for a penalty in front of the posts for Andy Tee to put over after 12 minutes Broadstreet RFC 6 – Malvern RFC 7
On 16 minutes Malvern were again attempting to increase their lead by using their Left winger to attack Tom Stokes wing, The street backrow were a little keen stepping over the offside line when trying to cover back and Malvern were awarded another penalty, which Hayes successfully slotted through the uprights. 'Street then made some great ground initially running it out of their own 22 utilising Ben Dawes on the crash again, a kick into the Malvern 22 saw the away side clear their lines, to be strangely brought back for a lineout on the 22 yard line. On 21 minutes a poor lineout throw from Carlos to the back of the line in the Malvern 22 saw the ‘Street turned over then give away the penalty. A tantrum from Dawes followed throwing the ball away giving Malvern another 10 yards. A line out then scrum followed with communication between Thatch and Carlos a little lost. Handbags followed with a penalty awarded to Malvern for them to kick for the corner. Pressure from the lineout saw Ed ‘Seventy’ Simkiss penalised and sent to the bin on 26 minutes and the resulting lineout saw Malvern increase their total, fly half Hayes this time unable to add the extras. Street took the game straight back to Malvern with some more great forward work in the ruck and mauls. The only answer for Malvern was to take the maul to the ground giving Andy Tee the option to take another shot at goal. Unfortunately the kick went wide. Malvern cleared and Street took the ball straight back to them, a high tackle from Malvern centre Billig on Tom Stokes saw Malvern penalised and Broadstreet were looking for a try, opted for the kick for touch. More running from the resultant driving mauls allowed Nick Thatcher to beat a couple of defenders and feed Nigel Mukarati with an outrageous over the head pass, Nigel showed power and strength to cross the Malvern tryline for 'Streets first try of the day. The try was converted by Andy Tee with a kick close to the touchline. Broadstreet RFC 13 – Malvern 15.
Simkiss returned to the pitch following his spell in the bin and 'Street started to gain confidence. A strong run from debutant Mark Rea from the 'Street 22 opened up the pitch for Andy Tee and Lynsey Bishop (On for the injured Matt Fielder) 'Street kept the ball well and Simkiss was on hand to power over for his 3rd try of the season, an attempt to justify his self induced position in the top try scorer poll. Andy ‘Tetly’ Tee was good for the extras on the stroke of half time giving Street the advantage.

The start of the second half was a strange affair. Committee officers were busy topping up the floodlight generator or putting 50ps in the meter, not sure what but the 3 officials went into the changing rooms for tea and biscuits leaving both sides ready for the restart but no referee. The 2nd half started and the floodlights on the club house side weren’t sure if they wanted to work so the official halted the game. Our posh electric scoreboard didn’t appear to like its dirty power so decided to stop the clock on 20 minutes.
Malvern missed a penalty early into the second half and good breaks from Lynsey Bishop and Ben Dawes were able to alleviate the pressure, and allow Broadstreet to work themselves into good field position Strong running from Dawes again was to lead to his 5th try of the season converted by Andy Tee. Blair Cooper made his way onto the pitch replacing Matt Deardon who had a date at TGI's to prepare for. More handbags followed with a player from each side sent to the sin bin, this created more space and Street seemed more focused and played to their strengths by attacking through the forwards.Strong running from defence by Tom Greevy followed by trademark break from Thatch allowed the forwards, through Simon Morris, Mukaratti , Dawes and Simkiss to make strong inroads into the Malvern 22. Quick ball out to the backs saw Tom Stokes go over in the corner this was followed by the Malvern wingers knees into Stokes’ ribs. This should have earnt the player a yellow card for foul play, but the referee disagreed and gave 'Street a penalty restart. Andy Tee missing the conversion from out wide on the right. The fight back from Malvern was assisted by some poor options taken by 'Streets forwards. Ben ‘Keep your foot off it’ Dawes was the initial culprit putting a kick to nothing straight to the Malvern back 3. Malvern kicked for territory and Tom Stokes, using his football skills swept the ball to touch. This pressure resulted in a try under the 'Street posts which Malvern converted with a drop kick. Further Malvern pressure caused Gary Challis to go offside and in defence, Malvern used this penalty to push further into Broadstreet territory, eventually leading to a score in Broadstreet's right corner. Malvern missed the conversion Broadstreet RFC 32 Malvern RFC 27.
What now appeared to be gamesmanship from Malvern having been under pressure from the strong 'Street forwards had their replacement prop sin binned and 'surprise surprise' had no other player with front row experience. (This rings a bell). Going to passive scrums prevented them being under any pressure where they had been struggling all game and so seemingly benefiting from having a player sent to the sin bin.
Broadstreet's next try came again from Nigel Mukarati breaking from the back of a passive scrum and powering over the Malvern line, Andy Tee with the extras in front of the posts. Broadstreet RFC 39 Malvern RFC 27
Malvern finished the game attacking the 'Street line making good use of the scrums now that they were finally guaranteed the ball often taking lineouts and penalties. This allowed them to make good ground to the 'Street line and their last grasp defending saw a further sinbinning as Malvern scored taking their total to within loosing bonus point range. Dawesy showed both sides to his game where he played himself right into contention for Man of the Match with some great drives and crashes into the opposition defence creating great gaps and momentum, however the crazy kick and petulance when Street were penalised undid some of his great work.
