Broadstreet RFC Make The Long Trek To Scunthorpe RUFC.
Street visit Scunthorpe RUFC, the Seconds play on SUNDAY at Old Leamingtonians RFC in the Final of the Warwickshire 2nd XV Cup against Sutton Coldfield RFC and the Beavers play at HMP Onley. |
Broadstreet RFC First Team travel to Heslam Park in Ashby Road, for the return National League 3 Midlands fixture against Scunthorpe RUFC with a 3:00 pm kick-off. This game was originally scheduled as a home game for the Street, but their Ivor Preece Field Rugby Ground facilities are being used for the final weekend of the Annual Daily Mail RBS Schools Competition . In the pre-season the Greens kindly agreed to switch this match to their ground in Lincolnshire with the 13th November game being played in Coventry instead. In a topsy-turvy match that day, Street were ahead 27-10 at half time, but then conceded 21 unanswered points to go behind 27-31 before powering home in the final quarter to post a 58-34 scoreline. |
| Scunthorpe RUFC currently find themselves perilously close to the drop zone, just six points clear of third from bottom Kenilworth RFC , but have the comfort of three games in hand over most of their rivals. Scunny in fact have plenty of opportunities to pull away, having played just seven of their scheduled thirteen home games so far. They will be bitterly disappointed however to have surrendered 6-20 away at Burton RFC last Saturday, giving hope to the Staffordshire side who hadn't previously won for almost five months, since 2nd October 2011 to be precise. | |
| Sharpshooting Fly Half Mark Woollard leads Scunny's scoring list this season with 126 points from his boot, while Wing James Wade, Centre Tom Foster and Wingman Woody (aka Rewiti Vaimoso) have touched down nine, eight and eight times respectively. Scunny will be eager to bounce back from last week's reverse against Burton to finally put the issue of relegation well behind them. Street on the other hand will need to perform significantly better than they did in the second half last weekend at Peterborough RUFC or Scunny will start that process this Saturday. | ![]() |

Anecdote: On Friday 19th January 2001 three of us travelled up to Barton-on-Humber for a two night stay at The George Hotel, taking in the game at Heslam Park the following day. At 11:00 am on the Saturday morning we were notified by mobile phone NOT to bother journeying to ‘Sunny Scunny’ as the pitch was frost-bound. Early that afternoon we discovered JD Wetherspoons for the first time - The Blue Bell Inn. We emerged some hours later, needless to say, worse for wear, but still had a great night out and curry in Barton. Two nights in Scunny and not even a game! By the way, when the re-arranged fixture took place at Heslam Park on 3rd March 2001, Street’s Half Backs were Gee and Tee - hic! |
