Broadstreet RFC Colts’ appearance in the Final of the Warwickshire RFU Colts’ Cup on Monday 18th April stirs the emotions of many within the Club.

Although it was another routine day at the office for Nuneaton RFC appearing  in their  fifth consecutive Final, for the Street  it represented their first involvement in over fifteen years.

Broadstreet-RFC-Colts-LogoArguably, three key decisions by the officials could have been kinder to the Street lads, but the Referee and his two Touch Judges were doing their best in what was an action-packed and highly charged atmosphere at Coventry Rugby Club’s Butts Park Arena, full to the rafters with passionate supporters from both sides.  In the end Street  were edged out 18-23  to a very accomplished Nuneaton side including some very fine and talented individuals.  Street  pushed all the way with a never-say-die attitude admired by many independent observers and on another night might have emerged as victors.

Don Branston, Broadstreet’s  President was so pleased with the lads  “After the match in the dressing room I shook hands with them all and thanked them for their excellent  display of rugby -  a credit and big asset to the ‘Street’.”

Rick Skene, Broadstreet’s Chairman said “In general, the Colts have had a very productive season and player development has meant that three of the Colts have given the opportunity to display their skills at First Team level and numerous Colts have been blooded in the Coventry and Mid Warwickshire Second Team Cup Competition integrating them into Senior Rugby.  On Monday night the Colts played very well in losing narrowly to a well drilled Nuneaton Colts squad and displayed great grit and determination to recover from 3-17 down.  We hope to have many of the Colts featuring in our Senior sides next season.”

John Dodd, Broadstreet’s Playing Committee Chairman commented “A great effort from the lads to reach the final and a fantastic performance from the squad on the night.  A credit to their coaches, parents and the club.“

Tom Hoines, Broadstreet's Head Coach commented "One of the best games of rugby I have been involved in this year.  It was one of those games that I am sure the boys will look back to for a long time.  I have been really impressed with the Colts' standards this year, which why I have been very happy to have them training with the first team. Judging by the standards of Monday's game, I am sure that more of them will be making their debuts for the first team soon to add to the likes of Sam Vagg, Joe Lowry, Jack Howland and Mike Tyrell."

Dennis Howland, Broadstreet's Colts Coach enthused “After Monday night’s Colts Cup game I would like to say how proud of the lads I am.  They were a great advert for Mini & Junior rugby and this demonstrates what a wealth of talent the club has wrapped up in its very own Mini and Junior section.  The fact that the Colts are figuring in the senior teams is a great incentive to our Minis & Juniors and also to players within the county looking for a structured pathway to senior rugby.  Well Done must go to each and every one of the Broadstreet Colts who have made this Season a success and who played with pride and skill for THEIR club on Monday night."

Steve Walton, Broadstreet’s M& J Chairman added “This is the first Broadstreet colt’s squad in over 15 years to reach the final of the Warwickshire Colt’s Cup. The young men of this team have risen through the ranks of Mini and Junior rugby, many of them starting playing our great game at just 6 or 7 years of age.   This team should be our inspiration to serve the young players of the ‘Street’ as they are all the life blood of our great club.   Their commitment, desire, team spirit, loyalty and of course their talent, took them to the final. With the clubs continued commitment to youth rugby and support of the M&J section, we can and will have future teams aspiring to similar successes."

Clearly the lads' performances and attitude throughout the season and in the Final have inspired everyone at the Club and it is hoped that the lads appreciate how much they are appreciated.
