As part of the sponsorship for the new team, to be called Broadstreet BURRDA, the club have received a complete set of brand new ‘StreamlineSpecialist 7s jerseys (specifically for 7s tournaments) that were debuted at the annual Spitroast 7s, held at Barker's Butts RFC.  Street fielded two sides at the event and achieved mixed levels of success: -

Louis Smith – (Winger, 2nd XV)

Adam Wheatley – (2nd Row, Broadstreet M&J graduate)

Marc Fisher – (2nd Row, Broadstreet Colts)

Ross Harrison – (Winger, Guest)

Broadstreet BURRDA 7s 2nd Team, being slightly more rotund than most opposition, put up spirited displays against the likes of Loughborough University Old Boys and Old Laurentians RFC, but only managed two victories from the group of six and finished far from the qualification standard for the Semi-finals.

Broadstreet BURRDA 1sts, on the other hand, had a far more successful day and remained unbeaten throughout the qualifying group stages, with a number of impressive tries from Chris Dodd and Ziggy Zutic from the 1st XV, supplemented by some creative play from guests Nathan Tilsey and Rob Knox. They met the ‘Racing Snakes’ (a team based around a number of Barkers Butts RFC players) in the tournament Semi-Final and dispatched them with a 26 – 12 victory to ensure a Cup Final place.

Their opposition Old Laurentians RFC had played well all day and had beaten the “Broadstreet Burgers” easily earlier on in the tournament.  However, a try from Broadstreet BURRDA’s Ross Harrison after a perfectly weighted chip ahead from Nathan Tilsey put Street ahead 7-0 after only 20 seconds of the final and it seemed that we had the ability to win the tournament easily.  However, Old Laurents reacted well and played some excellent 7s which completely starved Street of the ball, built territory and eventually forced a gap which allowed them to draw level. Another try followed for Old Laurentians shortly after the break and despite an attempted rally from Broadstreet once they had finally rescued the ball from their opposition, they were unable to convert it into solid points before the final whistle blew and they had to settle for a creditable second place.

The Spitroast 7s provided a platform for Broadstreet and BURRDA to test their new 7s partnership and with the inclusion of 7s in the Olympic Games, the partnership is keen to develop and become more involved in the active 7s circuit in the UK (http://ur7s.com/tournaments).

Next year Broadstreet BURRDA will be attending some of the most prestigious 7s events in Europe possibly being jump-started by a full club tour to Holland in late May in order to compete in the Amsterdam 7s (http://www.amsterdamsevens.com/).
