Too many local Clubs cancelling games at short notice.   

Rugby Lions RFC have taken the decision to withdraw from the Warwickshire 2nd XV League due to a number of games being cancelled at short notice.

Saturday’s game against Stratford RFC was the third time in five matches that the opposition has failed to fulfill a fixture against the Lions’ Development XV, leaving the Club with no choice but to seek alternative arrangements.

Rugby Lions Head Coach Neil Back said: “The Warwickshire RFU committee is understanding and supportive of our reasons for withdrawing from the League. The decision was taken because of the cancellation of fixtures by the opposition at very late notice, which left us with no time to arrange another fixture, rather than because of any concern over the level of competition.

“As anyone in rugby understands, you need games to develop players in a squad environment and to also create competition for the privilege of wearing the first team shirt. Having just one game at the weekend denies over half the players in the squad the platform to show what they can do. This leads to obvious frustration for everyone concerned.”

Back added: “The challenge for the Club now is to go out and find fixtures. It may well be that some of the sides that were due to face us in the League will still want to honour the fixture against us, which would be fantastic if they did.

“This Saturday (November 5th) we have managed to arrange a game against Leicester Lions RFC 2nd XV at Webb Ellis Road, kick off 2.15pm.

“Leicester Lions are a Tier 4 team and it’ll be the type of game that we need to challenge the players and help them develop.”
