Street come good in the Second Half.
Six points adrift from safety, Broadstreet hosted fellow league strugglers Newport in what was a must win game if the 'Street want to be playing National League rugby next season. There were a number of changes to the team that lost so disapointingly to Malvern including Jon Duncan coming back to replace Andy Skene at full back, Ed Simkiss replacing Chris Dodd in the backrow, Ed Mbaaaaanara replacing Ian Renard in the back-line and James Rooke making one of his 1st league starts since our National 2 campaign in 09/10 writes Luke Truslove.
The match started well for the visitors when Broadstreet failed to clear their lines from the Newport kickoff and gifted full back Liam Holder 3 points a mere minute into the game. However, Broadstreet responded instantaneously when a quick tap and snipe from Nick Thatcher after a penalty was awarded brought the home side within a few feet of the try line, in characteristic fashion Ben "The Beach-Master" Dawes took control from the base of the resultant ruck and carried over a couple of defenders as he crashed over for his 6th try of the season. Scott Harman added the extras. 7-3
Within a couple of minutes Broadstreet were over the line again when they collected the Newport restart and after a couple of phases broke down the right flank. Winger Pete Bicknell interlinked with fellow backs Todd Freemantle and Ben Dawes who carried the ball from Broadstreet's own 22 deep into the oppositions half before finally unleashing centre Ed Mbakawasaki who had done extremely well to have even been in support of the ball carrier. It was therefore even more of a surprise to the Broadstreet faithful when Ed was able to carry on his run from Newports 22 and head for the corner flag for a try, albeit in slow motion it was gladly welcomed by the crowd. Scotty Harman missed conversion 12-3 after just 6 minutes.
As we all know tis season despite seemingly having the front foot Broadstreet always find away to shoot themselves in the foot, and it was no different in this game. Almost immediately from the restart a relatively simple tackle in the midfield was hopelessly missed and Newport cruised through the gap. A couple of phases of play sucked in the Broadstreet defenders and allowed Newports 2nd row Michael Woodhouse to finish of the move and a try gifted by weak Broadstreet tackles. Liam Holder missed the conversion and with less than 10 minutes gone the score was 12-8
After 15 minutes of mixed pressure and alot of unforced errors, mainly from Broadstreet, Pete Bicknell scored a rare try for the outside backs by exploiting gaps in Newport's midfield but the conversion was missed. Liam Holder brought the visitors back to within one score with another superbly struck penalty on the half hour mark despite Broadstreet clearly being the side in control. It was therefore even more frustrating for the home crowd when Broadstreet's stupid errors gifted Newport more possession and territory and they were able to capitalise and take the lead. However, credit must go to Newport Number 8 Fredericks though because the Newport 2nd try was possibly the most outstanding individual effort of the match, receiving the ball in midfield he was able to show fantastic pace to get outside the Broadstreet back-line and head down the wing. When 2 Broadstreet defenders were finally able to rein him in he offloaded a delicate pass blind out of the back of one hand which fell into the outstretched arms of Liam Holder who went over untouched under the posts, which he converted himself.
HT 17-18
Shortly after half time play was stopped after Newport 2nd Row Goulson was injured in a lineout when Broadstreet attempted to compete and the disruption resulted in a hard fall to the ground from height. Unfortunately it has been reported that Goulson has broken his leg and will miss the rest of the season, which is always dissapointing to hear and we wish him all the best in his recovery.
After the 10 minute break because of the injury, Broadstreet responded much better and a period of pressure saw Todd Freemantle cutting a decisive angle, breaking the defensive line, beating a couple of players to score under the posts for Broadstreet's bonus point try. A penalty from Liam Holder closed the gap by three but it was definitely Broadstreet that were beginning to show their strength. 24-21
Ed Mbowiniso grabbed his 2nd try soon after to extend the advantage to two scores before being substituted and Scott Harman was able to add the extras. On came Ashley "Ratty" Lighthowler for his 1st XV debut at flanker after 16 odd years as the county's biggest winger and Chemo allowed Jordan Simpson to move into the centre. The replacements added extra attacking threats out wide and the stretched defence meant scrum half Nick Thatcher was able to duck round the ruck for his 9th try of the season from 20 metres out, conversion by Harman. 38-21
With two minutes to go and the game being won Broadstreet's long absent talisman Ed Simkiss managed to fit in a special "HONEY! I'M HOME!!" moment by getting himself sin-binned. Standard.
FT 38-21
MoTM - Luke Truslove, came on for 7 minutes....What a star!!! Alternatively some people have mentioned Ed Mkokoko had an alright game
DotD - Matt Dearden....for discovering his hamstring and almost deciding to pull it.
