The pressure of the day was very evident as the normally impeccable Dan Richards hadn't initially packed his kicking boots. Richards missed his first two kicks on 5 and 8 minutes. Leicester
Lions were again under pressure from wing forward Nigel Mukarati forced Lions into playing the ball on the floor, giving away another penalty which Richards normally slots over week in week out. This third kick hit the upright and you began to wonder whether this was to be Danny's and The 'Streets day or not.
An expectant crowd were disappointed, with little early drama except for the 4 missed penalties that would later prove critical to Broadstreet.
Broadstreet's early pressure paid off after 14 minutes when powerful running pre-empted a converted try by open side wing forward Owen Jones,
successfully converted by Dan Richards.
This became Broadstreet's best period of play of the match, and a big effort at a Leicester Lions scrum in their 22 caused chaos, allowing Nick Thatcher to break and get the pass away for wing forward Nigel Mukarati to crash over. Richards successfully converted and he seemed to back into his usual kicking rhythm.
Nick Thatcher then suffered a blood injury, once the referee had checked it was 'real blood' street were able to replace Nick with Adam Watts whilst the
injury was sorted.
Lions were rattled but still managed to sneak a try from a line out, allowing hooker John Williamson to go over. Converted by Leicester Lions Pietto Nanci.
Dan Richards shook off earlier nerves and extended their lead with a penalty following the Lions fullback Gareth Collins straying offside.
Half Time: Leicester Lions 7 pts - Broadstreet 17 pts
Broadstreet maintained their momentum in the second half, and a minute in winger Greg Summers built on last weeks hat-trick by returning a poor Lions clearance with a try in the right hand corner. Converted by Dan Richards.
At 24-7, Broadstreet could be forgiven for feeling complacent, but Leicester Lions
began their second fightback in as many weeks with renewed vigour
and energy..
It started with a penalty by stand-in kicker Pietto Nanci, and was followed by a superb individual try by his opposite wing, Gareth Roberts who chipped and touched down his own kick. Nanci missing the coversion attempt.
Richards responded with another penalty. Leicester Lions continued to throw everthing at the Street defence in the final minutes and were rewarded with another try by centre Scott Alfred, who burst through to set up a nail biting finish after Nanci's conversion. However, Broadstreeet held on to record their second win of the season.
