Broadstreet hosted Bradford & Bingley RFC at the Ivor Preece fields for their first National League game for six years. Any fears the home side had about the step up in standard were confirmed as the visitors scored twice in the first ten minutes of the match.
Winger Marcus Dracup capitalised on The Bees immediate pressure by scoring after two minutes in the corner. Broadstreet replied with a Penalty from fly-half Danny Richards, but this was
quickly nullified by a second Bee’s tries, scored by centre Philip Greaves on 9 minutes.
This sharp introduction to National 2 was what Broadstreet needed to bring them into the game. They found their rhythm after 15 minutes starting with another Danny Richards penalty and finishing with a 75 metre break-away try by debutant winger Greg Summers.
After scoring their first Broadstreet never looked back, Summers crashed over from a metre to score his second on the 20 minute mark. The Bees shortened the gap just before half time scoring the last of their points with a penalty.
Half Time: Broadstreet RFC 16pts - Bradford & Bingley 15 pts
The second half started much slower but was spectacularly revitalised by Broadstreet’s third converted try, a series of forward rumbles was punctuated with a well judged cross-field kick by
Richards, collected by winger Danny Phillips and launched extravagantly back inside to his oncoming full back Wayne Lester.
Broadstreet rounded off their second half with two further tries, a
hat-trick for debutant Summers and a well deserved try for back row Nigel Mukarati.
