A close win and a pat on the back for the Lions – 5/12/09

Broadstreet 3rd XV            21

Leicester Lions 3rd XV

Tries: Andy Tee 2, John Warne

Conversions: Andy Tee 3

A big thank you to the Leicester Lions for helping out on a difficult weekend that saw the Broadstreet 2nd decimated by injuries and unavailability. The Street could only manage one team, a weakened 3rd with a handful of 2nd team players.

The match was evenly matched with the Lions front five gaining the upper hand, but Broadstreet’s back row and half backs were able to nullify the threat and it was Tee who opened the scoring with a text book break and try which he duly converted. Despite the Lions scrummage starting to take effect it was Street who scored next with John Warne crossing under the posts after some good pressure, Tee again converting. With Street being forced to change the front row the Lions took the upper hand a finished the half strongly with a converted try of their own, and a second disallowed.

HT: Broadstreet 14 – 7 Leicester Lions

Street started the second half with a couple of changes in the pack and gave 3rd team debuts to 3 new backs.  A mixture of those changes and some and some strong backs play from the Lions centres started to put Street under pressure. Against the run of play, Tee broke from 60 meters to score a fine solo try for his brace, again converting the kick. Lions fought straight back and camped out on Broadstreets line for over 15 minutes, some heroic defence and poor decision making from the Lions was Streets only saviour until Street were awarded a penalty for a needless use of the boot, Street cleared and managed to hold out for the rest of the game despite some poor tackling. A hard day’s work and a lucky victory. Street will travel to Shipston this week for a league fixture.

Star Men: Andy Tee with the match winners and Colm Berry’s dogged defence and powerful clean outs at the ruck.

Champagne Moment: Tee’s second try – untouchable!

Broadstreet 3rds Go Top

Broadstreet 3rd XV            54

Dunlop 2nd XV                    39

Tries: Andy Tee 2, Ross 2,  Andrew Hirons, Chris Price, Danny Rowstron, Ben Moorecroft

Conversions: Chris “Milky” Price 7

Broadstreet 3rds went top of the Warwickshire League Two table with a fantastic win away to Dunlop RFC. This is a significant achievement as Street is the only 3rd team in a league full of 2nd teams following promotion last year. Broadstreet were rampant in a one-sided first half that saw some awesome rugby form both the backs and the forwards, with Connor and Tee pulling the strings at halfbacks which allowed the backs to dominate. Despite the forwards struggling at set-pieces they were excellent in the loose.

HT: Broadstreet 47 – 7 Dunlop

Street started the second half with a couple of changes in the pack and gave Chris Watkins his Broadstreet debut on the wing. A mixture of those changes and some strong changes in the Dunlop pack on top of playing up the deceptive slope proved decisive for the home side and they fought back well. Street kicked far too much possession away which allowed the Dunlop backs into the game. Despite some poor tackling Street managed a converted try after some good forward play to secure a hard day’s work and a sweet victory. Street will entertain Old Laurentians this week in a friendly fixture.

Star Men: Ross with an excellent game and Ben Moorecroft scoring a try on his long awaited return.

Champagne Moment: The first half blitz of 7 tries which cemented the result!

You win some, you loose some!

Broadstreet 3rd XV                              3

Syston 2nd XV                                     66

Penalty: Chris “Milkman” Price

Broadstreet 3rds were on the end of a heavy defeat as Systons’ superior pace and fitness won the day.  However, Street can hold their heads up high as they dominated an excellent 2nd team for much of the first half. Some poor finishing close to the opposition line was a disappointing return for some hard fought endeavour, and Street could only manage a penalty. Syston’s 3 converted tries all came from breaks out wide and Street ended the half with a series of niggly injuries.

HT: Broadstreet 3 – 21 Syston

The second half was all downhill; Syston brought on some more pace and ran in 7 more tries as the Street simply ran out of steam and players. Despite battling on it was an early finish, hot shower and into the bar for a beer!  Street entertains Dunlop 2nds this week in a Warwickshire 2 League fixture.

Star Men: Team Performance, when getting stuffed, do it as a team!

Champagne Moment: Not much bubbly this week, but the biggest hits of the day were dished out by the Street!

Broadstreet Keep Up the Pressure

Broadstreet 3rd XV                         31

Old Leamingtonians 2nd XV          11

Tries: Simon Skene, Richard Drury, Andrew Hirons, Mike Bednall, Jamie Richardson

Conversions: Chris “Milkman” Price 3

Broadstreet 3rds kept up the pressure on League leaders Bedworth as they notched another win over 2nd team opposition. An impressive performance saw Street dominate a spirited Old Leams side who simply couldn’t live with Streets experience and execution. The game was a closely fought encounter for the first 20 minutes, but Skene started to release the backs who found holes across the Old Leams back line. The first score came from some concerted pressure from the forwards on the Old Leams line before the ball went along the back line for prolific winger Andy  “YP” Hirons to go over.  Within minutes Street had scored again after a good break from Skene, saw Dave Stevens supporting well and released Bednall for Streets second, Milkman converting. Streets continued to pile on the pressure but were unfortunate to have 2 players sent to the sin bin due to some crazy refereeing, the likes of which should not grace the game at any level.

HT: Broadstreet 12 – 0 Old Leamingtonians

Street started the second half with a couple of changes which had the desired effect and before long debut winger Richard Drury skinned about 4 defenders to round off a great run with a try, Milkman converting. This was followed shortly by a couple of Old Leams penalties. Skene then found another gap between two defenders and glided past the fullback to score under the posts, milkman converting.  Old Leams had a strong 10 minutes towards the end of the half and managed a consolation try. But it was Street who finished strongly with Jamie Richardson going over for Streets fifth try to round off an excellent team performance.  Street entertains South Leicester next week in a friendly fixture.

Star Men: Team Performance.

Champagne Moment: Captain Skene having to tell the referee off, and that it was a game of rugby, hilarious!

Broadstreet Pace and Power Too Much for Bedworth Bulk

Broadstreet 3rd XV           31

Bedworth  2nd XV             7

Tries: Chris Dodd 2, John Brown, Ethan Griffiths, Drew Hudman

Conversions: Jamie Dodd 3

Broadstreet stood up well against a powerful Bedworth pack to secure the points with some fast and furious play. Although the game was full of scrappy moments and a bucket full of penalties from both sides it was individual breaks at pace that tore the Bedworth defence apart.  Despite Broadstreet taking an early lead with tries from Ethan Griffiths and Chris Dodd, Jamie Dodd converting one, it was Bedworth who posed the greatest threat with some unrewarded powerful surges on the Broadstreet line. Streets defence was organised enough to hold off the challenge and despite the loss of Bednall for 10minutes, the closest Bedworth came was with a penalty in front of the posts. Street had all but wrapped up the game by half time, when an excellent run from centre Stu Crawford set up the John Brown to crash over the line, J. Dodd converting.

HT: Broadstreet 19 – 0 Bedworth

The second half was a dull affair with both sides struggling to make any concerted passages of play, Chris Dodd did cross for Street and Bedworth managed a consolation penalty try on their one appearance into the Street 22. The match finished with a last minute try from Drew Hudman, J. Dodd converting. Street entertains Old Leamingtonians next week in another Warwickshire League 2 fixture.

Star Men: Jamie Richardson and John Warne – solid games

Champagne Moment (more like a bottle of Lambrini with straw down at Scholars): Mike “The Bully” Bednall getting a yellow card for a retaliation push, priceless!
