BROADSTREET V SCUNTHORPE.    6TH JANUARY, 2007. MIDLANDS ONE.

This was a bleak day with lots of rain.   The club was bustling, with three sides playing after the long holiday break, and the under 13 sides both playing and entertaining the crowd pre-match.

Broadstreet, who were narrowly defeated by Scunthorpe earlier in the season, came out full of determination, to play some scintillating rugby during the first quarter.  After that, Scunthorpe dug in, keeping the ball with their forwards and defending doggedly.  Broadstreet, despite playing most of the game in their opponent’s half, failed to score for the rest of the game, resulting in a dour stand-off.  The referee applied the new ruling on scrimmaging, and rigorously enforced the releasing rule.  This resulted in a surprised Ben Shepard spending ten minutes in the bin.  The second half was much the same, with ‘Street’s Richards adding 2 penalties. Five minutes into extra time, Scunthorpe managed to score in the corner.

Tom Greevy for ‘Street, was over the line from a loose maul, two minutes from kick-off. Score 5-0.

Scunthorpe’s Robinson kicked a penalty four minutes later. Score 5-3.

On ten minutes, Broadstreet went to town with Greevy scoring again from a fumbled ball. ‘Street’s Thatcher, dummying the opposing backs, scored a touchdown two minutes later.   Richards converted both.  Score after 13 minutes, and at half time, 19-3.

Richards kicked two penalties in the second half, on twenty one, and thirty minutes.  Score 25-3.  The game was at a stalemate in wet slippery conditions, with neither side managing to break through until five minutes into extra time.  After some very mixed play, Scunthorpe’s fly-half, T. Foster, touched down in the corner to bring the final score to:-    Broadstreet 25  Scunthorpe 8.
