In near perfect conditions for rugby, a Broadstreet team of eighteen players, with a good mixture of youth and experience, arrived at Leamington's Moorfields Ground on 10th October. Leamington, however, had sent five of their 3rds over to Balsall & Berkswell with their 2nds in error and therefore only had twelve players. The Street bench of Josh, Danny and Dave all volunteered to go to play for Leams, making fifteen a side.
The first half started with a back row of Cumbo, Smithy and Pete Branston, with a combined age of over 150, the younger lads in the pack knew that they were going to need to do some running… And running they did!
Five tries in the first half, four from Scott Truslove and one from Callum Abbott, all long range efforts off first or second phase, after good work at the breakdown by the pack.
Three were improved by the boot of Andy Vennard. With tacking in the midfield being somewhat optional from both teams in the first period, Leams nippy centre scored a brace also.
Half Time: Leams 12 – 31 Street.
Scott TrusloveConnor HuntThe second period began with both teams tightening up their defence with the fourth senior player, Stewart Crawford, to the fore with some crunching tackles. The Street pack was performing strongly, being well marshalled by Connor Hunt at scrum half and after several well worked rumbles up the field, it was Connor who popped over the line twice, both conversions being added by Vennard. Two more tries from the impressive Truslove, after good work by the backline put him in at the corner, increased Street's lead further, with Vennard adding a further conversion from out wide.
Then came the two moments of the match…
The game had needed to go to passive scrums earlier in the half, but this time Leams somehow managed to kick the ball through to the Street no. 8 Branston who, in the spirit of the game, kicked it straight back to them.
From the next phase of play, with Leams in a promising attacking position, a Sniper popped out of the bushes and shot Connor Hunt in the calf - or so we all thought from the way he went down - but it turned out to be cramp, which was expertly dealt with by prop/physio Jack Barker.
With Street laughing too much to concentrate properly, the Leams 7 popped over for a try. Street regained their composure enough for one last score in the final minutes, with Mitch Hancox the beneficiary of a storming run from Brendan McGuire, who seemed to be taking four Leams defenders with him. The final conversion from Vennard, taking his tally to seven for the day, was closely followed by the final whistle.
