Woeful tackling, poor defence and missed opportunities saw the home team take the victory.
Barkers 22 Broadstreet 18,
Broadstreet Colts travelled to Barkers for the first round of the U18’s National cup and opened the scoring with a try from a line out around the 22 and drove over the line to score. However some poor discipline gifted the home team a penalty from the restart after an unsuccessful conversation.
The penalty was the start of the home team pressure for the next twenty minutes on the Broadstreet half where eventually Barkers crossed the line after some poor defence and tackling with the try was successfully converted. Broadstreet converted a penalty taking the lead back but Barkers scored another converted try. Broadstreet attacked the Barkers line and were awarded a series of penalties where the referee sinned binned one of the home front row players. The half ended without Broadstreet scoring any further points.
The second half started badly for Broadstreet from a clearance kick gathered by the winger, which then saw him run the across the width of the pitch and scoring in the opposite corner. This gave the home team a comfortable 19:8 lead. It took another ten minutes or so before the Broadstreet lads started to get back into the game. Cailiff Cooke scored from another trade mark catch and drive from the forwards bringing the score to 19:13. A scrum in Barkers half saw Broadstreet win it against the head and instinctively Liam Obrien went down the blindside followed by James R and with a good time pass saw James go over the line bringing us within 1 point of the hosts. Two minutes left on the clock and Broadstreet receiving the kick off the hope and expectation was to see them go back down the other end of the field but this was not to be as the kick was knock on awarding Barkers a scrum in our 22. After a couple of phases of play saw Broadstreet give away another penalty which was converted successfully and the referee blowing for time.
