What a cracker!
On a beautiful day for fast and free flowing rugby, this game failed to disappoint. Street again blooded a host of colts and the mixture of experience and youth was mirrored by a determined Guild side that provided excellent opposition. The first half started with some scrappy play before Dave Cumbo latched onto S. African winger Ali’s kick through to drop onto the ball and finish well for the opening try, the Milkman going wide with the conversion. Guild hit back with two penalties before Street clawed back the lead with tries from winger Mark Britton making his debut and Butch Phillips after a year out with a dislocated elbow, the Milkman hitting both conversions. Guild ended the half strongly with an electric try from their speedy colt winger which was also converted for a 19 – 13 half time score.
Street came out for the second half with a determined edge and stretched the lead from a quick tap and powerful run for a Ben Shepherd try, Milkman converting. Street started to take control and after some good work from the forwards the ball went along the backs for Si Skene to dummy twice to go over under the posts, Milkman converting. Street were now cruising and led 33 – 13. Minutes from the re-start prop Ady Jones was sent to the bin, followed a minute later by second row Bill Vennard and as if that was not enough, Paul Lydster and a token Guild player all found themselves watching from the side. Down to 12, and with a lack of weight in the pack Street conceded 3 tries and 2 conversions within 7 minutes to bring Guild within one point at 33 – 32. However Street were not for the taking and after some dogged and determined play they forced their way into the Guild half and the ball was thrown along the line for Mark Britton to cut inside and stretch over for a fine try. As the 15 was restored, Street began to take control and a battering run from Timmy Harrison provided the impetus for a strong finish. Prop Ady Jones broke from a ruck to run 50 metres chased by his opposite number all the way and bundled over in the corner. Shortly after, Butch Phillips scored his second after excellent handling from Skene and Lydster to seal the win and end a fabulous game of rugby. Street welcomed colts Mark Britton, Nathan Rooney and Matt Robinson who all had fantastic games, hooker David Roff edging the Man of the Match award from Dan Hilliar.
