Broadstreet Play Bournville To A Standstill!
Frustrated ‘Street leave it late to grab the maximum in a stop start, sometimes static, contest against one-time front runners Bournville.
Back on dry ground after last week’s mud bath, Broadstreet RFC combined forward power; particularly at scrum-time where ‘Street pummelled their opponents, with threequarter guile, to leave Bournville RFC in mid – table, whilst a maximum points, efficient, if not spectacular, 33 – 7, four tries to one, home win, sees ‘Street hold second place writes Bob Harcourt.
Top league kicker Lee Chapman added 13 points with the boot; two conversions and three penalties, the first penalty coming after 8 minutes, to kick off proceedings at the Ivor Preece Field Rugby Ground. On 14 minutes, prop Ignas Darkintis was on hand to register his maiden Street try, completing a scrum half Nick Thatcher trade-mark break; with good linking support from wing Andy Murray and centre Todd Freemantle. Captain and number 8, Chris Wood then scored from a scrum pushover, (converted by Chapman) on 21 minutes; sandwiching standout visiting centre, Rob Eatough’s score from a close in, unstoppable, tap and go penalty; duly converted by fly-half Alex Warner, for 18 – 7. Just before half time, a clean break by the ‘Bromley Bolt’, winger Andy Murray, taken on by the supporting Freemantle, looked unstoppable until the latter glanced the wrong way for support and the chance was gone. “Oh, don’t report that” said Mrs Freemantle, “OK” said the writer! Chapman finished off the half with his second penalty. Half Time: Broadstreet 18 Bournville 7.
Lee ChapmanTodd FreemantleTwo minutes into the second half Chapman landed his third penalty kick at the sticks as ‘Street’s scrum, not for the first time, disintegrated the opposition’s; 21 – 7 and on 14 minutes, outstanding Todd Freemantle finished off a great passage of play and a Man-of-the Match performance., with the build-up involving Tom Harris, Freemantle, Will Owen, who made the break, and Andy Murray, “Just look at those dancing feet” said Mrs Freemantle, “He should be on Strictly’….” Chapman converted, 28 – 7. Frustratingly, the second period, like the first, was blighted by penalty awards; two yellow cards - for Bournville player’s foul play and killing play – and; even more frustrating, scrummaging went uncontested for periods, firstly, when Bournville’s loose-head was carded and almost immediately, their tight-head sustained, what seemed like a very painful leg injury. We trust he will be fit and well for next week! Then, with eight minutes to go and ‘Street pressing for the bonus score, the visitor’s hooker, Aaron Smith, killed play near his own line and another yellow brought on more uncontested scrummaging. Nevertheless, ‘Street persisted and prop Ben (Top Try-Scorer) Dawes obliged with an unconverted try two minutes before full time for ‘Street to earn the bonus point. Full Time: 33 – 7.
