News on the street spreads to swell squad numbers.
Fifty years from now, rugby fans the world over will recall three great matches; The 1973 All Blacks v Ba-baas, the 2012 All Blacks v South Africa and 2014 Broadstreet 3s v Old Wheats 2s. It really was that good!
For this Warwickshire League Two fixture at the Ivor Preece Field Rugby Ground, Street made several changes after last week’s defeat to Dunlop’s 1st team. Mister Chairman (John Warne) and Ben Dawes were dropped, the former being the victim of a shift towards a youth policy, which saw Andrew ‘Greggs’ Skene move to outside half. These changes made all the difference, as Street spent the afternoon on the front foot against game opposition from Old Wheatleyans RFC writes Andy Tee.
'Greggs' SkeneThe first half was all Broadstreet as the forwards built a platform for the silky skills of Andy Tee and ‘Greggs’ at half back. Tee scored twice (both from his own line) and there was a brace for Ashley Lighthowler plus one for Adam Tyrell. These tries went unanswered as Street’s defence snuffed out any breakaways that Old Wheats managed. Lighthowler and Pete the Pole (his name’s Piotr Wisniewski) to the fore in this aspect.
Half Time: Broadstreet 35 Old Wheats 0
Piotr WisniewskiThe second half was a rather strange affair. Street made a raft of substitutions, bringing players on and also loaning players to Old Wheats. Wheats had arrived with the bare minimum and then proceeded to pick up injuries due to the sheer physicality of Street’s defence (Honest). Tee completed his hat trick (he really is some player), Yorkshire Gav crosed for his first after a strong run from Tyrell and then Murray Mint crossed for his first ever Broadstreet try. He would have got a jug in afterwards but his Mrs told him he had to come straight home to do the decorating. In between these Street tries, Wheats scored four of their own. Street lost the plot for a 10 minute spell as Pete the Pole enjoyed a cameo appearance for the visitors.
Daz WattsLate on there was a chance for Ashley Lighthowler (Lee’s brother) to complete his hat trick, but he dropped the ball with the line at his mercy. I’ve seen better hands in a hospital dustbin. Daz Watts had one of those days with the boot. He slotted his first seven kicks (from in front of the sticks, obviously) and was playing like Dusty Hare. His last kick was unfortunately more Dusty Bin. Normal service resumed.
So overall a pleasing performance and a valuable league win. As well as the usual faces, the game was a chance for some of the younger lads in the squad to get some game time. Craig Foster, Kev Truslove and Pete Branston are surely the future of the club, in a back row that could dominate for years.
