A Brace apiece for Pena Monteiro and Beddows.
Broadstreet Development took a last minute pool fixture and gratefully travelled north to Staffordshire to play an experienced and well-drilled Lichfield RFC 2nd Team.
José Pena MonteiroStreet started well and were soon ahead with a well worked move resulting in a try for centre José Pena Monteiro unfortunately fly half Jack Howland wasn’t able to convert from wide out. 0-5. On fifteen minutes No 8 Alex Beddows latched onto the back of a driving maul from a well worked lineout to touch down for Street's second score, again Howland just missing the conversion from wide out. 0-10. Then Street lost the plot for twenty minutes; First Howland played a quick 22 drop-out straight into the grateful Lichfield centre's arms, giving him the opportunity to run straight under the sticks for a converted score and then, just on half time, several missed tackles resulted in a score for the Lichfield right wing. HT - 12-10.
Alex BeddowsAfter a few choice words from the Captain, Alex Beddows and the Development Manager, Phil Smith at the break, the Street Boys came out with confidence renewed. Lichfield just could not breach the excellent Street defensive wall for all their early possession, and after a long boot up field from Howland, resulted in a knock-on, Beddows barrelled over in the corner from the base of the scrum - again Howland missed the difficult conversion from the five metre line. 12-15. More sustained Lichfield pressure resulted in a penalty in front of the posts with fifteen to go, and their excellent standoff obliged with the 3 points to even the scores. 15-15. Street turned over possession with ten minutes left on the clock and with great hands and an even better line from Pena Monteiro saw him go under the posts - Howland adding the extras. 15-22. Lichfield had the better possession for the final few minutes of the game, but the defensive wall held firm, and a great double tackle on the Lichfield No 8 by Lee Lightowler and Jake Smith off the last play, saw and knock-on and the full time whistle. FT - 15-22.
Squad: Lee Lightowler; Mark Brittain, José Pena Monteiro, Dan Hope, Scott Truslove; Jack Howland, Olli Page; Neil Tatlow, Jack Barker, Harry Smith; Connor Burnett, Piotr Wisniewski; Adam Tyrell, Alex Beddows ©, Josh Lewis. Jake Smith, Chris Thompson, Twanda Chipadza.
Thought for the day: A squad of eighteen players with an average age of 19 putting in that level of performance against a team that has won every game so far this season by a high margin, would seem to bode well for the future.
