Coventry rugby club suffered the embarrassment of running into financial difficulties during the 2009 season along with Birmingham and Solihull in their championship season. It went to the final game with the championship structure playoffs where Coventry couldn’t pull the rabbit out of the hat and topped their season off with relegation. This led to many of the professional players contracted to the club looking elsewhere for their rugby, leaving a gaping hole which needed to be filled.
Invitations were issued to local clubs recommended players during the close season with large numbers of players from the junior clubs in the local Coventry rugby scene wanting to ‘Play rugby for Coventry’. Reports of great turnouts at training followed with the club having too many players, or too many players with limited national league rugby experience.
