Broadstreet Rugby Club Make Maiden Visit To Old Northamptonians RFC.
Broadstreet RFC travel to Old Northamptonians RFC, the Seconds entertain Luton RFC, the Thirds host Coventry Welsh RFC, the Fourths play away to Pinley RFC and the Colts play at Nuneaton RFC.
Broadstreet RFC make the relatively short forty mile trip, for a 3:00pm kick-off, to Billing Road, Northampton to face National League 3 Midlands newcomers Old Northamptonians RFC who, as one would expect, frequently use the contraction ‘ONs’ to refer to themselves. After having secured promotion to Midlands 1 East for the 2009-10 season, ONs had a mixed start at the higher level but finished very strongly with a number of fifty-plus point scores including a 100-3 scoreline. As a result, ONs made up ground on the eventual Champions Scunthorpe RFC falling short by a single point to finish as Runner-up thus qualifying for the Play-off. Unusually, the Play-off match did not actually take place as Bournville RFC were unable to play the match on the scheduled date, so a walkover was declared thus giving ONs two consecutive promotions.
Top scorer during the campaign Fly Half Alex Rose scored 274 points with 56 conversions, 43 penalties, 1 drop goal and 6 tries. He was ably assisted by Backs Charlie Barker, Matt Ireland and Will Kingston with 16, 14 and 11 tries respectively. Having checked with former Street Fixture Secretaries, it would seem that our paths have not crossed before at First Team level, although there have been some M&J’s and Colt’s fixtures.
Looking at their players, we know Inside Centre Alex Crofts, who starred for Broadstreet in our championship winning side of 2008-9 making 18 appearances in League and Cup, before suffering a serious knee injury and now fit, and by all accounts much more muscular, has understandably re-joined his local club following their two league elevation. Among the few other local connections we can find are ex Rugby Lions RFC, Kenilworth RFC and Warwickshire RFU Hooker Sam Overton and Scrum Half Lewis Barker who featured regularly at Level Four last season for Rugby Lions RFC and has returned to battle alongside his brother Charlie.
The fact that only two tries have been scored this season by Old Northamptonian’s Forwards, just goes to underline their commitment to playing open rugby as Alex Rose continues to feature prominently in the league’s Top Points Scorers’ table and speedy Matt Ireland is touching down with regularity. Although Old Northamptonians will be reasonably pleased with the start to the campaign following promotion, they will obviously feel much more comfortable with another victory under their belt at Broadstreet’s expense in order to consolidate in mid-table. With just two league games lost at their Billing Road headquarters in two and a half seasons, ONs will surely be a very tough nut to crack this weekend.

Second Team.
Despite a resounding 69-20 hammering of Hinckley RFC Seconds, Street remain in second place in the Midland Invitation Premiership League table, but only due to having played fewer league matches. Street Seconds welcome Luton RFC Development to Ivor Preece Field Rugby Ground for a game kicking-off at 3:00pm. Street have been very impressive in recent weeks and it will be interesting to see how they fare against what is sure to be much stronger opposition as ‘the Lutonians’ head the East Midlands Bombardier League with four straight wins out of four to remain undefeated in all games this season including an 87-0 ‘friendly’ pounding of Peterborough Lions RFC Seconds. Street will need to get the white Cup kit out to avoid a dreadful colour clash.
Third Team.
Earlsdon RFC must be sick of the sight of the Street. With Street Seconds having eliminated Earlsdon Seconds from the Warwickshire Second Team Cup 37-3 the week before, Street Thirds went one better registering a 50-10 win against Earlsdon Development. This weekend the Thirds entertain Coventry Welsh RFC with a kick-off 3:00pm
Fourth Team.
Street Fourths, about to be renamed following a poll, weren’t able to operate last weekend and will no doubt be chomping at the bit hoping when they take to the field this weekend at Pinley RFC versus their Seconds. Kick-off at 3.00pm.
Colts.
Street Colts, having secured an impressive 29-15 win over Luctonians RFC Colts in Round Two of the National Colts Cup off the back of a very strong first half showing, can now look forward to home advantage in the third round over the weekend of 20th / 21st November against Moseley RFC Colts, who returned from Kenilworth RFC with a narrow 26-23 victory. This weekend they return to Warwickshire U19s Merit League action by hosting traditionally strong Nuneaton RFC Colts in a game kicking-off at 3:00pm. Nuns are have only lost one out of six and therefore top the league.
