Myton Hospice Charity Fundraiser

Friday Night Rugby at Broadstreet rugby club against Rugby Lions was a very cold evening, it snowed in Binley Woods prior to the games kick off and the temperature only got lower as the night progressed. The Crew Girls donned their Broadstreet shirts and with their shorts on went around the club and pitchside selling the raffle tickets and what a fantastic job they did.

On the Night the club raised at total of over £3000 for Myton Hospice. Many thanks for all of the people who ran articles, donated prizes, worked the stalls, organised, participated donated monet to the fund. I am sure Andy Farrington would be proud of you all !.

Broadstreet Rugby Club, Coventry Fund Raiser For Myton Hospice

On Friday 29^th January, Broadstreet RFC will host arch local rivals Rugby Lions, in a crunch National League Two North fixture which kicks off at 7.30pm at Ivor Preece Fields in Binley Woods, Coventry. With little to separate both clubs in the league, the game is poised to be a fiercely competitive encounter, with Rugby Lions undoubtedly seeking revenge for the 12-0 defeat at the hands of Broadstreet back in October.

As a fitting tribute to former Coventry and Broadstreet Rugby Football Club hooker Andy Farrington, who recently died aged 52 after a courageous battle against cancer, Broadstreet have decided to take this opportunity to raise some much-needed funds for Myton Hospice, who cared so brilliantly for “Faz” in the latter stages of his life.

To cater for a crowd anticipated to be in excess of 750, there will be hot food available, and an additional pitch side facility - “Fazza’s bar” – which will be serving canned beers, hot/cold drinks and mulled wine.

Before the game and in the half-time interval, entertainment will be provided by The Crew Girls Dance Group, and if you needed any extra incentive to come down there’ll also be a raffle with a number of great prizes!

The £7(adult)/£3.50(child) entry fee includes parking (subject to availability), your match day programme, and a donation to Myton Hamlet Hospice.

Combined with a percentage of the profits from the bar, we are aiming to raise a total of more than £1500.

As an added incentive to get there nice and early, we are also running a £2 a pint drinks promo from 5pm-7pm. So why not come and support your local teams and help us to raise money for a great cause!

Players Membership - Way Overdue!

Dear All,

Firstly thank you if you have already paid your annual membership, it is appreciated.

It has become very apparent and disappointing that there is a massive void in the amount of players who have still not paid this year’s membership.

Membership at Broadstreet is only £20 and there are concessions for students and special circumstances at the clubs discretion.

The membership of £20 is possibly one of the lowest in the entire country and in its own small way helps to keep our great club going, the pitches playable and gives you some basic RFU insurance.

Membership can be paid to Paul Harcourt or left behind the bar in an envelope for Paul Harcourt / Rick Skene or come and see me if you have a problem.

We are over 3 months into the season and there are still a lot of outstanding payments due, it has also been reported that some players are purposely avoiding paying which is not acceptable.

We all love to play on a Saturday and it is not fair to those who have paid that those who haven’t may well be stopping them from getting a game.

I would like to impress on those players who have not paid that selection will become very hard and may cost you a place if your membership is not paid up before Christmas.

Please make a point of bringing £20 on Saturday; it’s not a lot especially for a year.

Support your club and we will continue to support you to play rugby at a fantastic club.

A big thank you to the Leicester Lions for helping out on a difficult weekend that saw the Broadstreet 2^nd decimated by injuries and unavailability. The Street could only manage one team, a weakened 3^rd with a handful of 2^nd team players.

The match was evenly matched with the Lions front five gaining the upper hand, but Broadstreet’s back row and half backs were able to nullify the threat and it was Tee who opened the scoring with a text book break and try which he duly converted. Despite the Lions scrummage starting to take effect it was Street who scored next with John Warne crossing under the posts after some good pressure, Tee again converting. With Street being forced to change the front row the Lions took the upper hand a finished the half strongly with a converted try of their own, and a second disallowed. 

HT: Broadstreet 14 – 7 Leicester Lions

Street started the second half with a couple of changes in the pack and gave 3^rd team debuts to 3 new backs.  A mixture of those changes and some and some strong backs play from the Lions centres started to put Street under pressure. Against the run of play, Tee broke from 60 meters to score a fine solo try for his brace, again converting the kick. Lions fought straight back and camped out on Broadstreets line for over 15 minutes, some heroic defence and poor decision making from the Lions was Streets only saviour until Street were awarded a penalty for a needless use of the boot, Street cleared and managed to hold out for the rest of the game despite some poor tackling. A hard day’s work and a lucky victory. Street will travel to Shipston this week for a league fixture.

Francis Baron announces succession plans

Francis Baron OBE, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rugby Football Union ( RFU) has announced his intention to retire from the role at the next Annual General Meeting of the Union in July 2010. Francis joined the RFU in October 1998 and has shepherded the RFU through the changing landscape of rugby for over 11 years.
 
 Francis Baron said, "I will be entering my 65th year next year and I felt it was the right time to set my retirement date to enable an orderly transition to my successor. It will enable him or her a full year in office prior to a change in the Chairmanship of the RFU in 2011 and the World Cup in New Zealand later that year together with ensuring senior management continuity through a period of change.
 
 "July 2010 also provides a natural break point for me and not just because it is the end of the season. All elements of the South Stand re-development project will have been completed by then and having secured the World Cup for England in 2015, the establishment of the 2015 operating company will need to commence in earnest in the following season. Clearly my successor should lead on this and have a blank sheet of paper to work with.
 
 "By July I will have had nearly 12 memorable years with many high points and will have visited hundreds of clubs all over the country and met many outstanding volunteers who do so much to run the Community game. I am pleased I will be passing on to my successor a financially strong Union with a strong management team implementing a clear eight year Strategic Plan supported by long term agreements with all our key commercial partners - Sky, Nike, O2, Investec, Compass, Marriott and Virgin."
 
 During his tenure he has turned round the RFU commercially and financially and today the net worth of the organisation stands at £150m with a turnover in the past year of £119m with a net profit of £9m compared to losses when he arrived of £10m. As a result RFU investment in the game at both Community and Elite levels has reached record levels. On the field the England team won a Rugby World Cup in 2003 and reached another final in 2007. He has overseen an exceptional growth in the grassroots game with adult participation overall up 12% since 2003 and in particular the mini and junior rugby up 49% in the same period.
 
 Chief among his off field achievements has been the re-development of the Southern end of the Stadium which will be finally completed in December 2009. Today the complex comprises 80,000 square feet of conference and event space, a 4 star Marriott hotel, a concert venue, a Virgin Active Classic Health club, a Rugby Store and the new RFU corporate offices.
 
 John Owen, president of the RFU, commented, "I would like to thank Francis for his outstanding contribution to the RFU in nearly 12 years as CEO. I have had the privilege of working with Francis since the day he arrived at the RFU, and have served with him on the Management Board since 2001, and have witnessed the total commitment he has given to his job. When it would have been easier to sit in Twickenham and manage the game from there he got out to the grassroots game. I have lost count of the clubs he and I have visited together and where he has shown his passion and intelligence in helping grow the game. The advent of professionalism had the potential to blow the game off course but Francis has always kept a firm hand on the tiller and the position that rugby in England finds itself today is entirely thanks to his unstinting hard work and focus."
 
 The RFU Management Board has been authorised by the RFU Council to lead the search for Francis' successor and will cast the net widely in search of candidates able to bring the right experience and mix of skills to the complex role.
 
 Martyn Thomas, chairman of the Management Board, added, "I have worked closely with Francis since my election as Chairman in 2005. His achievements are many and his legacy will be everlasting with the financial transformation of the Union and the South Stand complex and hotel set to play a major role in the RFU over the coming years. None of it would have been possible without his vision and drive. I would also like to thank him for leading the executive team that delivered our successful bid for RWC 2015. It is typical of Francis' approach that he had the foresight to take a difficult decision for him personally but one that was in the best long term interests of the RFU."
 
 Francis Baron will be available to support the Union in a non- executive capacity should that be required as well as looking for other non-executive director roles.

Saturday December 12th see's Broadstreet RFC start the Christmas celebrations off with a bang. Broadstreet RFC presents 'Hotel Zulu' . Hotel Zulu are a 5 piece progressive / alternative / rock band from Nuneaton with influences ranging from Jonny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis to Muse and Rage Against The Machine so its set for a night of riff's, solo's and melodic mid sections topped with some tasty vocal lines.

About Hotel Zulu

Hotel Zulu: Formed in early 2008 with a new lead vocalist and the instrumental remains from a previous band, it was time for Hotel Zulu’s life to begin! With an already decent collection of dynamic material they finally had the icing on their musical cake.

The next 10 months was found to be pretty busy for Hotel Zulu, taking their live show to various locations throughout the Midlands, namely Leicester, Coventry, Birmingham and of course, their home town Nuneaton. It wasn’t long before they had gained enough recognition to earn themselves a loyal fan base and go onto audition for events such as Glastonbudget, Battle of the bands and various charity gigs.

Hotel Zulu’s music combines intricate guitar harmonies, melodic midsections and soaring vocals to create a sound that is sure to excel at even the biggest of venues. Glastonbudget is the most significant date in their calendar yet but is sure to only scratch the surface of what they are capable of!

Bonfire Party

Broadstreet RFC present their annual Bonfire party to be held this coming Friday 6th November 2009. We are lighting the bonfire at 07:30 pm and the firework display begins at 08:00pm.

Admission is only £5 for adults and £3 for children and OAPs.

Broadstreet 3rds went top of the Warwickshire League Two table with a fantastic win away to Dunlop RFC. This is a significant achievement as Street is the only 3^rd team in a league full of 2^nd teams following promotion last year. Broadstreet were rampant in a one-sided first half that saw some awesome rugby form both the backs and the forwards, with Connor and Tee pulling the strings at halfbacks which allowed the backs to dominate. Despite the forwards struggling at set-pieces they were excellent in the loose.

HT: Broadstreet 47 – 7 Dunlop

Street started the second half with a couple of changes in the pack and gave Chris Watkins his Broadstreet debut on the wing. A mixture of those changes and some strong changes in the Dunlop pack on top of playing up the deceptive slope proved decisive for the home side and they fought back well. Street kicked far too much possession away which allowed the Dunlop backs into the game. Despite some poor tackling Street managed a converted try after some good forward play to secure a hard day’s work and a sweet victory. Street will entertain Old Laurentians this week in a friendly fixture.

Star Men: Ross with an excellent game and Ben Moorecroft scoring a try on his long awaited return.

Broadstreet 3rds were on the end of a heavy defeat as Systons’ superior pace and fitness won the day.  However, Street can hold their heads up high as they dominated an excellent 2^nd team for much of the first half. Some poor finishing close to the opposition line was a disappointing return for some hard fought endeavour, and Street could only manage a penalty. Syston’s 3 converted tries all came from breaks out wide and Street ended the half with a series of niggly injuries.

HT: Broadstreet 3 – 21 Syston

The second half was all downhill; Syston brought on some more pace and ran in 7 more tries as the Street simply ran out of steam and players. Despite battling on it was an early finish, hot shower and into the bar for a beer!  Street entertains Dunlop 2nds this week in a Warwickshire 2 League fixture.

Broadstreet on Coventry Evening Telegraph

Broadstreet RFC now have a premier place in the rugby section of the coventry evening telegraph website recognising the status of the club playing in National League 2 North. Up until now all of the street's updates have been hiden away with all other junior rugby reports on the evening telegraph site, however this week the newspaper added the facility to browse straight to the latest news from the club.

Obviously the clubs website here at http://www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk should be your first port of call for the latest news, however keep an eye on the telegraph site for quotes from Crofty, Louie, Rick Skene etc.
