Pete McKenna, Jamie Richardson and first aider Nikki O'Brien join Broadstreet Colts double Warwickshire champions
Following on from the 1st team success of last week, becoming champions of National League 3 Midlands and Warwickshire cup winners, Broadstreet Rugby Club have a double reason to celebrate this season. It has been 35 years since Broadstreet as a club have had a cup winning Colts team, but the success of their current colt’s team has been described as phenomenal.
Mini and Junior Rugby success
The colts team have successfully completed the season as champions of both the Warwickshire cup and the Warwickshire league. The colt’s players and their coaches Jamie Richardson and Pete McKenna have been together for many years. The coaching duo have seen the team through the clubs mini and junior section accumulating in a double champions title. The coaches have worked hard since some of the team were 6 years old and are now proud of the best 17-18-year-old colts team for their success on and off the pitch. For some of the colts the league final was the last game that they will play together as they will move onto university and adult teams.
Broadstreet Colts met Stratford in the final of the Warwickshire Cup at the Butts park arena on 10th April. Playing last year against Nuneaton predominantly as U17s, the majority of the side remained from last season where they all had vivid memories of Nuneaton scoring a last gasp try to level last season’s cup final which meant that the trophy had to be shared between the two clubs as champions. Though hardly a disappointment to be crowned joint champions of Warwickshire, it was clear that this season they had a point to prove and were determined to take the Cup back to Broadstreet as outright winners.
In the final phase of the game Miles Fletcher fought through a number of defenders and scored a try which saw the score at 10 all. James Richardson converted just before the final whistle and the cup was taken back to the Street, the second year in a row. The first time in the clubs history.
The semi-final of the league was against the same Stratford side who were desperate to "pick themselves up and right the wrong" of the previous cup game, but Broadstreet never stopped playing and although Stratford went ahead with 90 seconds left, they gave away a penalty with time spent. James Richardson stepped up to kick the 35 metres penalty to win the game and placed Broadstreet in the final against Barkers butts, which was played at Southam Rugby club on 29th April. Broadstreet gave an exceptional performance against their local rivals with the final score being 31 - 14. A much easier win than the previous 2 games which went to the wire. A spokesman for the club said it was fantastic that a team who had grown together through the club and learned how to play skilful and intelligent rugby had become double champions in their final year of playing together.
