WARWICKSHIRE SOCIETY OF REFEREES
REFEREE TRAINING
Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA) Do you have referees operating at your club at any level of the game who have not had some basis training? If so you should seriously consider putting them through the RFU's Entry Level Referee Course, which will prepare then to officiate with safety and within the laws. This is the only recognised course which will give them a qualification to referee Rugby Union in RFU affiliated clubs. This is a SAFETY issue and in these days of litigation it is imperative that all those who referee, at whatever level, have at least the basic qualification to officiate. As the RFU's Regional Referee Trainer I am happy to arrange courses at a time and place to suit any club in the County, either at week-ends or in the evenings. All we need is seven people to run a course, and these can be advertised on the RFU web site to encourage outsiders to join and swell the numbers. Two or more clubs could combine. The cost of the course is £50, but in the first instance any club interested should contact me on this e-mail address giving their name and telephone number, so I can discuss the matter with them. To repeat, this is a SAFETY issue to protect your members and should be seriously considered. Peter Tolan ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Do you have referees at your club who have completed the Entry Level Referee Award or its predecessor, the National Foundation Course? If so they may well benefit from the RFU's latest initiative to help develop match officials who referee at their own clubs and do not benefit from the ongoing development given to members of the Warwickshire Society. These officials are key part of the community game and their ongoing development is important, not only to themselves but also to the players who are in their charge. In recognising this the RFU has appointed me (Peter Tolan) your local Community Referee Development Officer. In this capacity I am approaching clubs to see if they wish to host an evening where one of the RFU's Referee Development modules will be delivered. These two-hour sessions can include development training on different areas of the game including the scrummage, the tackle, rucks and mauls, the line-out etc and will be of interest to all club referees and anyone else interested in the game. They are not only educational but also a good social occasion for those who officiate and want to polish their skills. Dates can be arranged to suit, and delegates from other clubs in the area could be invited. The cost will be just £5 a head to cover the cost of materials and overheads and the sessions can be organised on any evening to suit your club. Please let me know if you are interested by e-mailing me in the first instance at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We can then discuss dates, the subject matter and other details. Thank you Peter Tolan
